One man’s hilarious but somewhat obvious attempt at claiming £250,000 on a National Lottery scratch card has gone viral, after he posted a picture of the ‘winning’ scratchcard to the National Lottery Facebook page.
Johnny Smith, from Ossett, West Yorkshire, posted a picture of his worn out scratchcard, pointing out the fact that while his card did reveal three £250,000 figures in the end column, which means he should be able to ‘start shopping at Waitrose in the near future’ – both bar codes had been ‘removed by a small fire’, which had also gone on to damage the game number itself.
Adding to his long list of blunders, he revealed he had also managed to spill pen ink on another identifying number on the card.
Nevertheless, he asked for the NL to send him a message to confirm his winnings.
While his post may not have got him the £250,000 he was after, it did get him some new internet fans as his post attracted over 33,000 likes and 14,000 shares.
National Lottery’s answer was pretty good too.
They gave him an in-depth response to his ‘winning’ scratchcard.
Thank you for your query.
We have investigated this image for you. We can tell that the ‘small fire’ that the scratchcard was involved with was very selective and clearly didn’t like the barcodes, We suggest that you completely fire proof your home to avoid such instances from happening again.
It may also be handy if you no longer use ink pens and buy pencils from now on to avoid another ink spillage.
Furthermore, looking at the image very closely it has come to our attention that the extra £250,000 on the top right hand corner has been placed carefully, however we recommend that you invest in some proper glue.
To conclude, we won’t be sending you a direct message requesting your details as this won’t be necessary, we would like to thank you for your time to contact us, we wish you every success in the future with our games – and maybe, just maybe one day you will be able to shop at Waitrose.
If you are unhappy with the outcome you can email us on: email@example.com for further investigation.

But it seems Johnny wasn’t the only one trying it on.
Another guy decided to add his own scratch card-winnings experience.
